Properties
Rampatri (रामपत्री), scientifically Myristica malabarica, is the whole aril (the lacy covering of the seed) of the Malabar nutmeg tree. It is often referred to as "false mace" or "Bombay mace."
Visually and aromatically similar to true mace, Rampatri lacks the intense, refined, and sweet-warm complexity of genuine Myristica fragrans. Instead, it has a milder, somewhat woody and less volatile flavor profile. While it has its own traditional culinary and medicinal uses, it is most notoriously utilized in the commercial spice trade to adulterate genuine mace.
