Star Anise (चक्र फूल), botanically Illicium verum, is a striking, star-shaped spice harvested from an evergreen tree native to southwest China and northeast Vietnam. It has a powerful, sweet, and intensely licorice-like flavor profile due to its high concentration of anethole.
It is a pillar of Chinese Five Spice powder, a critical aromatic in Vietnamese Pho broth, and a premium whole spice used in Indian biryanis and Garam Masala.
